International Exchange Programs
In today’s world, it is essential for management students to acquire a global orientation. The international exchange programs at the Telfer School of Management provide just such an opportunity. Students can complete their academic and professional endeavours in another international institution while exploring a different country and discovering a new set of customs. In an increasingly competitive job market, this type of experience is also accompanied by a new perspective on culture, increased adaptability, the tools to excel in an international workplace, and the chance to build global contacts. Furthermore, students will bring back unforgettable memories.
Bachelor of Commerce with option in International Management
An international exchange is mandatory for students in the International Management option. Consult the course sequence for this program.
Telfer International Exchange Programs Pre-Application Workshop
Every student considering and exchange is required to complete the pre-application workshop before submitting their exchange application.

Please note the testimonials are written by students and reflect their own personal experiences on exchange. The accuracy of all information, including immigration requirements, must be verified.
Information for Outgoing Students
To be eligible, students must have successfully completed their second year of study with a cumulative grade point average (CGPA) of 5.0. Some institutions require a CGPA of 6.0, and for certain institutions, completion of the third year of study is necessary. Students are encouraged to include up to eight (8) choices on their application.
Upon the evaluation of a student's application for admission, both the CGPA and cover letter are taken into consideration.
For all exchange programs, students will continue to pay full-time tuition fees to the University of Ottawa. Students must cover their travel and living expenses while abroad.
Students requiring permission from the CO-OP office must complete this form by January 15 of the application year.
The application deadline is January 31 for each admission cycle.
Once admitted into the program, students are required to complete a virtual, self-paced pre-departure workshop. This workshop provides essential guidance to help students prepare for the exciting experiences that lie ahead.
Key components of the preparation include consulting the embassy of the host institution’s country for information on immigration requirements, cost of living, currency, etc. Additionally, students are encouraged to explore student testimonials for tips and personal experience reflections.
Nominations for students are sent to their respective host institutions. The nomination process is typically completed in March for Fall exchanges and in October for Winter exchanges. As the nomination aligns with the host institution's timeline, it varies for each student. It's normal for students to be contacted by their respective host institutions at different times. Until initial contact has been made by the institution, we advise students to refrain from communicating with their future host institution.
Host institutions usually require students to complete an application, after which they provide a letter of admission. Upon receiving this document from the international institution, students must promptly proceed with the required immigration process for their host country.
Comprehensive health insurance is mandatory throughout the duration of students’ travels. Students can inquire with the University of Ottawa Students’ Union for more information on the travel coverage provided by their health insurance plan.
Finalizing travel arrangements, such as booking transportation and securing housing, is the next step in the process.
Course Selection
Upon admission to the Telfer International Exchange Programs, students receive a Results Form that outlines the number of courses to be completed during their time abroad, as well as the course exemptions that will be granted upon their return from the exchange. Any specific conditions applicable to the student will also be listed on this document.
During their studies abroad, B.Com. students can only enroll in business and/or third language courses (excluding French or English as a second language). Students must obtain approval for their course selection before enrolling with the host institution. To initiate this process, students must complete the required form and send it via email to
Enrolment
In June, students are registered under the TRF 1000 code for the exchange term. This enrollment signifies full-time status for the Fall or Winter term and part-time enrollment in the Summer term, with tuition fees paid to the University of Ottawa.
Registration at the host institution is managed directly with that institution, following their individual timeline. They will provide information on the process, deadlines, and other relevant details. As stated above, course approval is required before registering with the host institution.
Students who complete studies abroad during the Winter term of their final year are not eligible to participate in the same academic year’s Spring graduation ceremony. This is because international exchange transcripts are typically only available after the graduation registration period. On the other hand, students who study abroad during the Fall term of their final year can usually graduate during the same academic year’s Spring graduation ceremony, as exchange transcripts are available in time for the graduation registration period.
Travel Security
Traveling exposes individuals to new risks. It is crucial to consider these potential challenges and have plans in place in case of any unforeseen events during a trip. Therefore, students are required to complete mandatory travel security activities, including the Travel Risk Awareness course and trip registration.
Completion of pre-departure training and trip registration is mandatory. All students must fulfill these steps to qualify for mobility scholarships and to credit courses completed abroad.
Instructions for the Travel Risk Awareness course are provided to students during the pre-departure workshop. Students must also register their trip on the Travel Safety website before they travel.
For questions about the training or registration, students can contact the International Travel Safety Adviser at
Students are encouraged to familiarize themselves with their host institution by participating in orientation events and visiting the exchange program office. The beginning of the exchange presents an excellent opportunity to explore their new city.
Upon arrival, students may find that their initial course selection needs adjustments. To modify their course selection, students must submit a new approval request form via email to
Approximately two months into their studies abroad, students are required to complete a questionnaire. This questionnaire includes a report, consisting of three pages or more (1,800 words), along with a submitted photo . The photo and comments may be utilized for promotional purposes related to the International Exchange Programs.
At the end of their studies abroad, students are required to request their official transcript to be sent by the host institution via email to
For students in the International Management option, a minimum of 12 units must be successfully completed as an exchange student with one of the Telfer School of Management’s international partner institutions to fulfill the exchange requirement of their program.

On June 30th, 1994, the Provincial Ontario Government eliminated Health Care protection for non-Ontario Residents. Therefore, all International Students must purchase the University Health Insurance Plan (UHIP), to provide protection compared to that available from the Ontario Government (OHIP).
All international students must purchase the UHIP in order to register at the University of Ottawa.
UHIP subscription is COMPULSORY. It is not necessary for you to purchase another insurance plan for the academic year. UHIP coverage starts on the 11th day of the month preceding the start of a program of study, for newly enrolled students, or at the beginning of the session, for returning students.
It is preferable that you pay your UHIP coverage with your tuition fees through a bank transfer. For further information on the coverage provided by the University Health Insurance Plan, please visit the UHIP website or
Even though you may already have health insurance, you will not be exempted from purchasing the mandatory UHIP.
To view the premiums for the current academic year please see the Review Your Health Insurance page.
The timetable divided into Fall and Winter terms, indicates the courses that will be offered for each term.
The classroom location, the names of the professors and any modifications will be available in mid-August. It is essential that you verify this timetable before the start of classes. You can find the timetable at:
https://www.uottawa.ca/course-timetable/
Search for available courses by entering the subject code (ADM) and course number (ex. 1300).
All Business courses are offered three hours per week in one of the following formats:
- Two one and a half hour periods per week; or
- One three-hour period per week.
Many undergraduate courses such as ADM 1300 or ADM 1301 have discussion groups (DGD) which you must choose according to your schedule. However, most discussion groups are not compulsory to complete your course during your exchange at Telfer.
*Please note that business attire is mandatory when professors request students to make formal business presentations as part of their lectures. Therefore, don't forget to pack at least one business suit.
Course Sections
Most courses of the Telfer School of Management are offered in multiple sections. Each section has its own time slot and professor. In the Timetable, the section is represented by the letter next to the course code following by two zeros, such as A00, B00, C00, etc.
For example:
ADM 2341 A00 is offered Monday for 11:30 to 13:00 and Thursday from13:00 to 14:20.
ADM 2341 E00 is offered Wednesday from 19:00 to 21:50.
If you select a course with a section, you must clearly indicate it on your registration form in the appropriate space and attend that specific section throughout the term.
Definition of the Course Codes and Symbols
Each course is composed of alphabetical and numerical codes. The alphabetical codes indicate the topic of the course. (ADM = Administration or Business).
The first digit of the numerical codes indicates the level of the course.
(ADM 1300 = level 1000 = 1st year) (Undergraduate)
(ADM 2341 = level 2000 = 2nd year)
(ADM 3350 = level 3000 = 3rd year)
(ADM 4312 = level 4000 = 4th year)
(ADM 5320 = level 5000 = 1st year) (Graduate)
(ADM 6320 = level 6000 = 2nd year)
The second digit indicates the languages in which the course is given.
1, 2, 3, 4 courses given in English
5, 6, 7, 8 courses given in French
0, 9 courses given in either French or English.
On-campus student residence is available at the University of Ottawa. Exchange students are usually allocated a room in the Marchand residence. Available facilities include:
