Humans of Telfer - Polly

"The inspiration to create WMN came from joining the women's network at American Express when I worked there this summer. They are one of the top employers in Canada for Diversity Management, and won the award several times because they have so many networks; millennials network, remote workers network, women’s network; the list goes on. I joined their Women’s Interest Network, WIN. The interest came when I went to their roundtable series. Led by 3 VPs, a group of 20 women of all ages and seniorities had the opportunity to have a conversation. I have never found such an authentic and genuine community of people who were willing to share their vulnerabilities and hard life lessons. I was so inspired that I immediately sent an email off to the Relationship Managers at the Career Centre. Once I started it, it wasn't just me but every person I talked to opened another door for me and it blossomed from there. It is so empowering to be in an environment where you see women leading at the front lines and supporting each other. If you're passionate about something, it grows."  Read more ›

"In general, my experience at Telfer has been good. I found the classes from some professors quite stimulating. I was also involved in clubs and extracurricular activities that gave me the opportunity to make the most of my academic experience. I find that the activities provided by the Career Centre help students develop skills and build their professional profile. I'm supposed to go to Madrid in the winter for an international exchange. I would like to improve my third language, which is Spanish, and gain a better understanding of international markets, especially European markets with which I’m less familiar. Since my professional goal is to pursue a career abroad, I will benefit a lot from this exchange." Read more ›

“My time here at Telfer has been challenging so far. Despite these challenges, my experiences have been rewarding. Telfer has allowed me to study in French immersion, as well as to gain valuable volunteer and work experience. After much hard work and determination, I am proud to say that I was admitted into the CO-OP program. Ultimately, through my developing skills, I have learned to overcome these obstacles by setting goals, being persistent and managing my time.” Read more ›

“I heard about being a Career Centre ambassador through a friend who was also applying for the position. I realized I didn’t want to limit my extracurricular experience to specific clubs but to expand my experiences to include something that is more general to the student body. I knew as a Career Centre ambassador I would be stepping out of my comfort zone, since I would be constantly networking with students,  employers, as well as Career Centre staff. Read more ›

"The fact that I chose a specialization in Finance can be explained in part by my family culture: almost all of my family works in this field. I also have a passion for numbers, and the Finance program was the ideal choice. When I came to Telfer, I had expectations just from an academic standpoint, but I gained so much more: I worked as a teaching assistant, I was president of a competition and I also did CO-OP internships. "The scariest moment for me at Telfer was in my second year when I realized all my plans had to change. I went to a Career Centre workshop and started talking to the relationship managers, Kimberley and Caroline. They told me I needed to network more than I initially thought (since I was no longer in co-op) and get to know myself better. This pushed me to get my Career Development Certificate and really get involved. Read more ›

Humans of Telfer - Adnan

"Over the past four years, I've made numerous friends here at Telfer. It's not just meeting other students in classrooms or surviving final exams; it’s getting involved with the 13 clubs the faculty has to offer. With encouragement from other people, you find your stride and discover who you are as a person. I've been a part of 6 organizations within Telfer over the past 4 years. Some of my roles have been long-term, with CASCO and Enactus, and some short-term, like the Entrepreneurship Club. I'm doing various tasks and experiencing volunteer work that has allowed me to get out of my comfort zone, and helped me discover who I am. The most significant and valuable takeaway from my time at Telfer has been the ability to diversify my skill set, thanks to the Telfer Career Centre. I wouldn't have the experiences I have today if it wasn't for the Telfer network and the ability to put myself out there. Knowing that the students will support and accept me for who I am, has been priceless." Read more ›

"I chose to specialize in Management because, in the future, I want to work for myself. I want to manage my own business one day and be my own boss. I am in Management to explore the diverse options and opportunities of owning a business. Being my own boss would also be a lot simpler and easier because I would be able to plan my own schedule and do things that I like. It would allow me to work on my hobbies, such as acting and volunteering. Being my own boss means I am in charge of my life and I'm not being micromanaged." Read more ›

"Being a TA for the Business Communication Skills course (ADM 2381) has allowed me to help students develop useful public speaking skills and to effectively prepare them for all types of presentations they might encounter. It has also allowed me to have a noticeable impact on other students’ skills and confidence in terms of presentations. Seeing the progress some students make and the skills they develop throughout the duration of the course is really impressive." Read more ›

"101 week was really fun as a guide this year. Experiencing it from a different perspective made me see just how much Telfer does to make sure the new students have fun. We worked hard to make it a great week. This year we introduced more mixed faculty activities which really helps people connect with others so now it is a week of opportunities to meet even more new people!" Read more ›
