Networking

Students Networking

"It's not what you know. It's who you know!" This phrase is heard all too often and can be somewhat irritating to students or people who are 'just starting out'. How exactly do you get to know someone who can help you get a job? The answer: NETWORKING!!

What is Networking?

Networking is a way of meeting and connecting with people in all types of careers. The more you put into networking, the more you will get out of it. In order for your networking activities to be successful, you must advance your understanding of what it truly means to interact with others.

Any opportunity that puts you face-to-face with an individual is a networking opportunity. If that individual is someone who is in a position to hire or supervise others, then that interaction is, in a sense, an interview. Whether or not that individual has the ability to hire at that time is not important; however, your interaction with that person and the impression that you make are extremely important!  You never know who they know.  They may be able to put you in contact with the recruiter of your dreams or at the very least, offer you the kind of advice that has the potential to guide you along the path to success.

Over 80 per cent of jobs are found through the hidden job market.  Both the Telfer School of Management and the Career Centre offer multiple networking opportunities throughout the year, so don’t miss your chance to connect with leading industry recruiters. Start building contacts today!
