Connexions Program (ADM 4904/05)

Connexions Program

Program Overview

What is Connexions?

Connexions is a voluntary internship program that bridges the gap between academic and professional experience.

Supported by the Career Centre, you find your own internship, ensuring the experience fits with your goals and objectives. You will work a minimum of seven hours per week for 12 weeks (one term) in an organization related to your field of study.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a work permit if I am an international student?

  • You do not need a work permit if you are an international student. Students in the Connexions Program are working on a volunteer basis. There is no compensation from employers and, therefore, no work permit needed.

When do I need to apply?

  • In order to apply for the Connexions Program, interested students must first attend a one-hour information session. In this session, you will receive all the program details and the required forms to apply. This must be done during the term preceding the one during which you wish to participate in the Connexions Program.

  • Please note that for fall internships, you must attend a session during the previous winter term to be eligible, since there will not be sessions during the summer.

Do I find my own internship or am I placed?

  • All students are responsible for finding their own internship prior to the anticipated deadlines established in the Connexions Course Syllabus. Following the mandatory Connexions Network event, you will be given a list of potential employers and internship opportunities from the Career Centre. However, students are not limited to employers that have shown interest in the Program and are encouraged to find their own employer.

What do I need to have to participate?

  • In order to participate in the Connexions Program, you must:

    • have completed the first- and second-year common core courses for your program option at the time of application.
    • ensure that you are not enrolled in the Co-operative Education Program.
    • have a cumulative grade point average (CGPA) of 6.0 or higher.
    • have a willingness to learn and to be an ambassador of the Telfer School of Management.

Can I participate more than once?

  • Students can participate in Connexions twice (ADM 4904 and ADM 4905).

  • Students who wish to participate in Connexions a second time must take on a different opportunity than that of their first experience.

  • Students are at liberty to remain with the same organization for their second internship; however, they must take on a different project. For example, if they created a comprehensive marketing plan for their employer during their first internship, they can help with the finance department’s accounts payable during their second internship.

If I don’t find an internship, do I fail the course?

  • Students MUST find an internship in order to participate in the Connexions Program, and it is their responsibility to secure their internship. If a student is having a hard time finding one, it is their prerogative to notify the Connexions Program coordinator.

  • Students are only registered in ADM 4904/4905 once they have secured their internship and it has been approved by a Telfer professor.

How am I graded?

  • The Connexions Program is a pass/fail course evaluated by Telfer professors. Upon completion of the program and submission of the final reports, students will receive notification of a course pass or a course fail.

  • The student’s employer will also complete mid-term and final evaluations of the student’s overall performance and competencies. Reports are shared with the students by the Connexions Program coordinator.

  • To successfully complete the Connexions Program (ADM 4904 or 4905), you must:

    • work the required number of internship hours.
    • pass all employer evaluations.
    • submit a final report and receive a passing grade from Professor Delcorde or Professor Bonaccio.

How do I obtain a Co-Curricular Record through the Connexions Program?

  • Connexions has partnered with the Michaëlle Jean Centre for Global and Community Engagement (MJCGCE) to offer additional placement opportunities within the local non-profit sector.

  • Student completing internships with non-profit organizations may request a Co-Curricular Record (CCR) once they have documented their hours on the Community Engagement (CE) Navigator.

Can I be paid for my internship?

  • Connexions Program internships are unpaid internships. Students are working as volunteers and therefore do not receive compensation.

I am a transfer student from Algonquin College or CEGEP, so my courses are out of sequence. Can I still participate?

  • It may be possible to participate if your courses are out of sequence; however, decisions on such cases are made on a case-by-case basis. Students must still submit an application during the set application period, but must include a letter explaining their situation. Students must also meet with an academic advisor of the Student Services Centre to determine their eligibility.

I am taking ADM XXXX during the fall semester; can I do an internship in the winter?

  • Students must complete all first and second year common core courses before registering for the Program. This means that students completing a common core course during the registration period for a Connexions session cannot register for that session. For example, students completing ADM 2302 in fall 2017 are not eligible to register for the winter 2018 Connexions session; they must wait and register for the summer 2018 or fall 2018 session after they have finished and passed ADM 2302.
