#Community: Ottawa 2017, Guy Laflamme and Telfer Executive MBA Alumni Association
The Nation’s capital is celebrating Canada’s 150th birthday and the Telfer Executive MBA alumni are not missing a second of it. Many alumni are joining as spectators while others are signing up through the Alumni Association’s volunteering initiative.
Telfer Executive MBA Alumni Association (Telfer EMBAAA) Executive, Pino Dicorato, EMBA 2016, is working with the Ottawa2017 organization to appoint Executive MBA volunteers within their 13 Ignite150 signature events that are scheduled events throughout the year.
“This is an important occasion for our alumni to reach out and give back to our community at large” says Pino. “It is also an opportunity to re-connect and engage with other alumni from the Program.”
So far members of the Telfer Executive MBA community have volunteered in two events during the month of February and Pino is currently working with Ottawa 2017 to identify volunteer needs at April’s upcoming event, the Sugarlumberfest.
Giving back to the community and to Guy
The aspect of giving back to our community is a core value of the Telfer Executive MBA and one that is applied throughout the 21 months of the program. The Ottawa 2017 volunteering initiative is particularly special to many alumni because it is their chance to give back to the man who brought the giving component to the program 12 years ago - Guy Laflamme.
“Many of us have taken the [Executive MBA’s] Strategic Marketing Management course with Professor Guy Laflamme,” says Pino, “we felt that this is one way which we can help support him through the Ottawa 2017 events.
Guy spent 15 years teaching in the program. He retired from the position in 2016 to focus on his role as Executive Director of Ottawa 2017. He introduced the Strategic Marketing Business Consulting Project to the course in 2005. The project focuses Executive MBA teams to work as consultants to develop a marketing plan for a not-for-profit or charitable organizations. Over 65 organizations benefited from these marketing plans under Guy’s leadership. The consulting projects continue today under the leadership of Professor Michael Mulvey.
Continuing their efforts past Ottawa 2017 events
The volunteer component is something that the Telfer EMBAAA also looks to continue past the Ottawa 2017 events.
Telfer Executive MBA alumni have been reaching out to the Association asking to be involved in some form of volunteering and they’re listening says Pino. “The Telfer EMBAAA executive has therefore made it one of our mandates to fill this need and identify opportunities where there is value to society and to our members.”
Pino’s message to the Telfer Executive MBA alumni community as we continue to support the Ottawa 2017 volunteering initiative: “Our alumni truly know how to have fun! We continue to build on creating high performing and diversified teams through alumni from various cohort years. Thank you for making this the beginning of many special moments for Canada's 150th!”
