Thinking back to your childhood, was there a particular profession you dreamed of entering when you were an adult?
My mother tells me that for as long as she can remember I wanted to be a doctor. I used to sit on my grandfather’s lap and take a butter knife and pretend to operate on his chest. I would trace the scars from his open heart surgery and pretend to repeat the surgery. My grandmother was a nurse and she told me, even then, they were the ones that really took care of people. I don’t remember it but I guess I said “girls are nurses and boys are doctors”. My mother used to say I could be whatever I wanted to be. I became a Registered Nurse.
Choosing to complete an Executive MBA is a big consideration. After reviewing the various masters’ programs available, why did you choose to enroll in the Telfer Executive MBA Program?
As a Registered Nurse working in the United States and advancing in my career it became very obvious that business training and knowledge were going to be essential. When I left the states and came back to Canada I realized that even in the not for profit sector I was going to need to increase my business acumen. When I was looking at MBA programs I was very impressed with the consulting project format of the Telfer program. Having an opportunity to work with real clients and expand my network outside of health care will be an excellent experience.
What do you admire in a leader or mentor? Do you have someone who you consider a strong leader or mentor within your life?
There are many factors that make up a strong leader or mentor. They need to teach, guide and inspire. They need to be humble and strong. They need to be consistent and compassionate. I have been very fortunate throughout my life to be surrounded by strong leaders and good mentors. Whether it was my Mother, who was my first boss, who taught me I could do anything if I worked hard and learned from my mistakes. Or it was my wife, Janice, who told me she believed in me, when I wasn’t sure I could do it. Or it was my previous Director, Runay Valentine, who told me I wasn’t ready for the next job and that ‘Leaders are readers”, or whether it is my current boss, Joanne Read, who told me I could use my skills in a totally different world and lead a different team. I am very lucky to have all of these people still in my corner providing guidance and support throughout this program.
