Executive Leadership in the Public Service

“Executive Leadership in the Public Service” will provide leadership awareness, practical knowledge and strategic insight, which can be immediately applied with impact by participants in their organization. The program has been designed following consultations with a cross section of senior executives in the Federal Public Service to identify the critical skills needed by executives in their current context and environment.

The 6 module program will consist of 10 class days spread over 8 months, involving teamwork, case studies, action learning groups, and online activities.

Format

The 6-module program will consist of 10 class days spread over 8 months. Each day is 8:00am to 5:00pm.

How to register?

Applicants are required to submit a letter of application accompanied by a recommendation from their current supervisor. Applications as well as supporting documents are to be submitted by email to Brent Moore, Senior Program Officer, at bmoore@telfer.uOttawa.ca.

Who should attend?

This program is designed for recently appointed executives in the Public Service (EX 1 or 2). Post-secondary education or equivalent professional designation is expected.

  1. Leadership Awareness (360 Assessment, Learning Plans, Influence & Persuasion, and Negotiation Skills
  2. Leadership for Performance (Performance Management for Results, Building Trust & Providing Feedback, Lean Service Management, and Business Analytics)
  3. High Performance and Strategy (High Performance Organizations & Teams, Strategic Thinking, Developing & Gaining Approval of Initiatives, and Implementing the Strategic Plan)
  4. Transformative Change (Transformative Change, Planning for Change, Key Elements & Stages, Role of Key Players, Costs & Risks of Change, and Communication & Engagement)
  5. Agility and Collaboration (Partnerships & Alliances)

Program Takeaways

Each participant will finish the program with:

  • A completed 360 assessment process with coaching.
  • A Leadership Initiative they identified and advanced during the program, with support of their Action Learning Group.
  • A greater leadership awareness, practical knowledge and strategic insight, which can be immediately applied to their responsibilities during and following the program.

The program is led by Glen Bailey, Faculty Director and Executive-in-Residence at the Telfer School of Management, and a former Assistant Deputy Minister.
