This study considers the mediating role of internal knowledge sharing in the relationship between two critical aspects of intra-firm social capital (trust and goal congruence) and entrepreneurial orientation (EO), as well as how this role might be moderated by the firm’s level of formalization. Based on a sample of Canadian-based firms, it shows that higher levels of internal knowledge sharing relate to a stronger EO, and such knowledge sharing in turn results from higher levels of trust and goal congruence. It further provides a nuanced picture of the role of formalization in this process: First, high formalization enhances internal knowledge sharing and EO; second, though trust-based relationships are more instrumental for internal knowledge sharing in conditions of high formalization, the effect of goal congruence on internal knowledge sharing is stronger with low formalization; and third, internal knowledge sharing is a more potent enabler of EO in conditions of low formalization. The authors discuss the study’s implications and future research directions.
