The Telfer MBA’s integrated curriculum helps position you to lead people, take charge of organizations, allocate resources effectively and articulate strategic vision—fundamental skills of high-performance managers. Organized in six-week blocks, the curriculum covers the fundamental skills needed by leaders to achieve high performance in any industry or sector. The program kicks off with an intensive orientation period that focuses on team building and The World of the General Manager course. This course puts students in the position of a general manager who must set strategic direction, motivate personnel, allocate resources and integrate various parts of an organization in the face of uncertainty. Performance Management is the integrative platform for a substantial portion of the core curriculum. Casework that integrates Performance Management across core courses, such as Strategic Marketing Management, Operations Management, and Managerial Accounting for Information and Decisions, ensures the development of transferable skills and critical thinking.

Consulting Project

Students learn and apply best practices in management consulting by working with executives of local organizations and tackling problems faced by these professionals. Conducted under the supervision of Telfer School professors and the mentorship of professionally Certified Management Consultants (CMC), the consulting project is a unique opportunity for students to tackle real-life business challenges. It also accelerates professional accreditation with the Canadian Association of Management Consultants (CMC-Canada).

International Trip

Students gain a global perspective of the changing face of international management via a trip to a key international business centre. In 2008, for example, the one-week international trip is entitled Doing Business in Europe for High-Performance Firms and is hosted by the Vlerick Leuven Gent Management School in Belgium. Vlerick is one of few universities in the world that holds three major accreditations (Equis, AMBA and AACSB), making it a top European business school. Associated with two renowned Belgian Universities (KUL & UGent) and located in historic cities, Vlerick exposes students to the Belgian business culture while stimulating students in areas of entrepreneurship and innovation.

Electives

Telfer MBA participants customize the remainder of their program by choosing electives that suit individual interests and career goals — specializations such as entrepreneurship, marketing, finance, public policy and international management.

Full and Part-time

Intensive (full time, days, one year)

The curriculum and full-time course sequencing of the Telfer MBA have been designed to support a high level of coordination and integration—making it possible for you to complete the Telfer MBA in 12 consecutive months and then resume your career. And since the Telfer School of Management is a fully bilingual learning environment, you can earn your Telfer MBA by studying in either English or French.

Full-time students will have 15 to 18 hours per week of in-class contact. Full-time students must allocate at least twice that time, if not more, for individual and group work.

Professional (part time, evenings, two to three years)

The Telfer MBA is also offered on a part-time basis over 36 consecutive months if you wish to undertake your studies and remain on the job. You can choose to accelerate your studies by participating in the intensive International Summer Exchange Program in Europe and complete the Telfer MBA in 28 months. Students who select the professional option will attend two night classes per session (total of six credits).

Part-time students will register to two-hour evening classes (6 credits) per session for at least the first 5 semesters while completing the core courses. It is estimated that between 6 to 12 hours per week of group and individual work is required. Any additional credits will automatically change their status to full-time students. Core courses for the part-time students will normally be scheduled either Tuesdays and Thursdays, or Mondays and Wednesdays.

Note: Reducing the number of courses will not be permitted until the core courses have been completed.

Options

Joint MBA - Law Programs

In recognition of the complementary skills required for success in both business and law, this program allows the student a choice between the two areas of study in Canadian law. The student may obtain a combination of the MBA and JD (Baccalaureate of Law) degrees or the MBA and LL.L. (licence en droit) degrees within a span of four years.

No two professional degrees are more coveted than Law and the MBA. This joint program is designed to educate a new generation of leaders—business executives who can manage independently the legal challenges of contemporary corporate life; lawyers who can address the business needs of their corporate clients; and entrepreneurs who will move seamlessly between business and law.

The JD/MBA and LL.L.-MBA Programs provide students with exposure to a unique community of business and legal leaders in both the public and private sectors. Through numerous externships available in the Faculty of Law and consulting projects offered by the Telfer School of Management, students can gain valuable work experience for academic credit during each of their four years of study. In addition to private sector placements, externships exist with the courts, federal tribunals, government agencies and departments, and non-governmental organizations.
