Doctoral Leadership Development Program
The Telfer School of Management doctoral program emphasizes doctoral candidates’ holistic development, with personal and professional needs discussed on an ongoing basis between the students and their supervisors, the Program Director and the students’ professional mentors.
In parallel with seminars, special workshops and activities focused on personal and professional development take place throughout the PhD program. Some of these workshops are delivered through the Doctoral Leadership Development Program and others are offered as part of the Altitude Program, developed by the Office of the Vice-Provost, Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies and the Teaching and Learning Support Service (TLSS). Doctoral students develop the professional skills that prepare them for a variety of academic and applied research careers.
A few examples of our workshops are as follows: project (thesis) management, how to write a lot and overcome writers’ block, grant preparation, the publication process, effective networking at conferences, and how to prepare for the job market. Several workshops focus on teaching and pedagogy. Furthermore, we offer activities aimed at improving our students’ wellbeing and personal development, such as work-life balance, stress and time management, leadership, effective communication, and interpersonal skills.
In response to the growing demand for multidisciplinary research encompassing traditional areas of management, we offer two multidisciplinary fields (Entrepreneurship and Health Systems), and all students, regardless of specialization, examine the multidisciplinary nature of management decision-making. In all fields, Telfer students push beyond the traditional knowledge boundaries and incorporate knowledge from other disciplines—within and outside of management—in their work. As such, it’s not uncommon for our students to develop interests in areas such as sociology, psychology, economics, and information technology, depending on their major topic of study.
The core doctoral curriculum embraces emerging and sometimes conflicting paradigms including sustainability, responsible management and the need to balance environmental, economic and social outcomes. Ethical management is highlighted across the program.
Management Research Seminar Series
These seminar series allow us to host leading researchers from top universities and institutes across the world. These seminars give our students first-hand opportunity to learn from renowned international researchers and to develop their own academic network.
All doctoral students are invited to make at least one thesis-related presentation to the Telfer School of Management Research Seminar Series. They are also invited to present in the seminar series prior to giving talks at conferences.
We strongly recommend that all Telfer School of Management PhD students develop their teaching skills, regardless of their intended career. The ability to teach is an important skill for both academic and non-academic careers. As such, our students shadow their major professor and other faculty members through teaching assistantships and guest lectures. Second, our students are strongly encouraged to enroll in the University of Ottawa’s Certificate in University Teaching.
Our PhD program is full-time only, and it is not a distance education program. All students must complete the minimum six terms of full-time enrolment at the beginning of the program or nine terms in the case of students fast-tracked from the master’s.
The requirements of the PhD program in Management include successful completion of 27 units of coursework, a comprehensive examination (oral and written), a thesis proposal, and a thesis.
All students enrolled in the program (regardless of their chosen field) will take two common compulsory courses.
MGT7101 METHODOLOGICAL FOUNDATIONS OF MANAGEMENT RESEARCH (3cr.)
Theoretical and methodological foundations of management research and research ethics are explored. Topics include the purpose of social science research; nature and role of theories; relationship between facts and values; theory construction, testing, falsification and inference; "positivist" and "non-positivist" methods; social studies of science and scientists; and research ethics involving human subjects.
Students who have taken MGT5100 or MHS5301 at the Telfer School of Management as part of their MSc in Management or MSc in Health Systems will replace MGT7101 with another methods or analysis course of their choosing, which they will identify in collaboration with their supervisor.
MGT7102 THEORETICAL FOUNDATIONS OF MANAGEMENT (3cr.)
The foundations of various management disciplines are examined in the context of emerging and sometimes conflicting theoretical paradigms such as rationale exchange process, sustainability, responsible management and need to balance environmental, economic and social outcomes.
Methods and Analysis Courses
All students will take a minimum of 9 units of research methods and analysis courses, including:
MGT 7103 ADVANCED QUANTITATIVE ANALYSIS IN MANAGEMENT (3 cr.)
Topics covered include measurement, univariate and simple multivariate statistics such as: simple linear regression, multiple linear regression, logistic regression, analysis of variance, analysis of covariance, principal components analysis, exploratory factor analysis. Students will use major statistical packages to accomplish the work.
In addition to the 6 units of core courses, and the 9 units of methods and analysis courses, students will take 9 units (3 courses) of advanced courses in their chosen field of study. Information on these courses is listed in the field-specific pages.

In collaboration with their Thesis Advisory Committee, students may take a content course offered by another academic unit, in lieu of a Special Topics course, if deemed a better fit for their thesis research.
Given the interdisciplinary nature of the PhD program, all students will take one optional course (3 units) selected from a field of the PhD in Management other than the student’s primary field of study.
Comprehensive Examination and Thesis
The Comprehensive Examination must normally be completed within five terms of commencing the program and, at the latest, by the end of the sixth term. A student who fails either the written or the oral component of the exam is allowed to repeat it the following term. A second failure leads to withdrawal from the program.
MGT9997 COMPREHENSIVE EXAMINATION
The Comprehensive Examination is a two-part examination (written and oral) that is overseen by the Comprehensive Examination Committee. Once the written exam has been passed, the student proceeds to the oral. The comprehensive examination must be passed before the student can propose his or her thesis.
MGT9998 THESIS PROPOSAL
The thesis proposal, prepared under the direction of the thesis supervisor, must be defended to the satisfaction of the Thesis Advisory Committee (TAC).
