IBM Centre for Business Analytics and Performance presents

Data Analytics in the Energy Sector

presented by Matt Davison, Ph.D.
University of Western Ontario

In recent years the electricity and natural gas industries have transformed from "cost plus" monopolies or oligopolies with a focus on reliability into deregulated industries in which spot prices for gas and electricity are set, and complicated bilateral contracts are priced based on these spot prices in which both reliability and commodity price risk are priorities. In this talk I will discuss how energy storage is created and managed in a deregulated setting. With the advent of time of use metering, "Big Data" is becoming a huge trend in the electricity industry, where it is often associated with the "Smart Grid" concept. I will comment on how the work I have presented relates to these important new trends.

Whales and an Ocean of Noise

presented by Dr. Lance Barrett Lennard and Kathy Heise

Sounds travel much further than light underwater. Sensitive hearing allows marine species to navigate, find food and mates, and avoid danger. That vital sense is in danger of being blinded by noise as people increasingly use the oceans. With the longest coastline in the world, and an increasing offshore presence, Canada has the opportunity to take a leadership position on this issue.
